This seventeenth-century Nuremberg alms dish is a circular decorative charger fashioned from brass yellow metal. The piece displays a repoussé central scene depicting two figures carrying a large cluster of grapes, encircled by an embossed lettering band and multiple punched gadrooned border patterns around the sloping rim. Visible details include original suspension holes along the outer edge and surface wear consistent with age, alongside no recorded repairs. The charger measures 42 cm in diameter. For modern interior placement, this ornamental dish functions as a decorative wall hanging or sits flat above a sideboard in a living room, dining space or hallway. The warm metallic tones coordinate well with traditional wooden surfaces and stone walls. Regular dusting maintains the polished appearance of the brass finish without the need for abrasive cleaning products.

Nuremberg brass alms dishes are shallow, decorative metal basins produced primarily in the German city of Nuremberg during the 15th to 17th centuries. Originally used for collecting church offerings, they frequently feature central embossed motifs depicting biblical scenes, heraldic coats of arms, or allegorical figures.

These dishes were hammered from sheet brass, also known as latten, using repousse and chasing techniques to create raised central designs. The outer rims were stamped with decorative punchwork and concentric gadrooning, often featuring stylized Gothic lettering or leaf borders.

Authentic period examples exhibit signs of hand-hammering, uneven rim widths, and central compass marks from the turning process. The repousse decoration often shows smooth wear on raised details, alongside hand-stamped lettering bands and natural oxidisation within the recessed areas.

A brass alms dish works as wall-mounted artwork, particularly against dark-toned paint schemes, or displayed vertically on a plate stand atop a sideboard or mantelpiece. The warm metallic tones provide contrasting texture when paired with natural timber, stone, or woven fabrics.

To preserve historic patination, harsh chemical polishes and abrasive pads should be avoided. Dusting with a dry microfiber cloth is recommended, while occasional application of neutral microcrystalline wax helps protect the metal surface without stripping age-related oxidisation.
