Early 18th Century Oak Side Table with Bobbin-turned Supports, Circa 1700

18th century
Description

A charming early 18th century oak side table, circa 1700, of simple rectangular form, retaining a wonderfully rustic appearance and rich colour and patination acquired over centuries of use.

The substantial rectangular plank top, with a moulded edge, displays considerable age-related wear, including surface marks, scratches, old repairs and areas of heavy distressing, all contributing to its character.

Beneath the top is a plain frieze with horizontal moulded decoration, supported on four distinctive bobbin-turned legs, united by a similarly turned H-shaped stretcher for stability, and terminating in small bun feet.

A characterful example of early English country furniture, with attractive proportions, unusual bobbin turning and a pleasingly timeworn surface. Equally suited for use as a side table, occasional table or small centre table.

Circa 1700.

This early 18th century William and Mary side table dates from around 1700 and displays an English Country House aesthetic. Constructed from dark brown oak, the piece features a rectangular plank top with a moulded edge, sitting above a plain frieze with horizontal moulded decoration. Four bobbin-turned legs support the table, united by a similarly turned H-shaped stretcher base and terminating in small bun feet. The timber exhibits a rich colour and patination, alongside surface marks, scratches, old repairs and areas of heavy distressing acquired over centuries of use. Measuring 76 cm high, 87 cm wide and 56 cm deep, this side table fits well at the end of a sofa, as an occasional table or as a small centre table in a living room, hallway or study. Its rustic appearance and timeworn surface integrate easily into traditional and eclectic domestic interiors.

Bobbin-turned furniture features decorative lathe-turned wood forming a series of connected rounded beads resembling thread bobbins, a technique popular during the 17th and early 18th centuries in Britain.

Early oak side tables were predominantly constructed using native European oak with mortise and tenon joinery secured by wooden pegs, alongside bobbin-turned stretchers and supports for structural rigidity.

Authenticity is determined by evaluating hand-planed surfaces, irregular bobbin turnings, pegged joints, natural oxidation in unexposed areas, and wear on lower stretchers consistent with historical usage.

Position the table alongside contemporary upholstered seating or in an entryway to establish texture and architectural contrast, pairing it with minimal ceramics or modern lighting.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually along the wood grain, avoiding silicone-based sprays and direct heat sources.
