Antique Edwardian Rosewood Occasional Table C.1910

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine Edwardian rosewood occasional table of oval form, the richly figured top inlaid with fine stringing and centred by a classical marquetry motif, all raised on beautifully shaped cabriole legs terminating in original brass castors and united by a shaped undertier.

A notably good quality Edwardian example, well-proportioned as an elegant lamp table or highly functional as a movable stable surface ideal for placement beside an armchair or sofa in a formal drawing room or study.

This Edwardian occasional table is a dark brown rosewood piece in the Edwardian style. The oval top shows a richly figured grain with fine stringing and a central classical marquetry motif, supported by slender cabriole legs, a shaped undertier shelf, and small brass castors. Light surface wear indicates its age while remaining structurally sound and clean. It stands 72.5 cm high, 74.5 cm wide, and 44 cm deep. In a modern interior, this movable table serves as a functional surface positioned at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair in a drawing room or study. It also functions well as an elegant lamp table in a living space or hallway, bringing traditional English country house character to the home.

Edwardian occasional tables, produced between 1901 and 1910, are characterised by lighter proportions than Victorian furniture, frequently featuring marquetry inlays, delicate legs, and functional undertiers.

Cabinetmakers commonly used dark hardwoods such as rosewood and mahogany, combined with contrasting fruitwood inlays, fine veneers, and small brass castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-finished marquetry, period-appropriate joinery beneath the apron, natural patination on untamed surfaces, and original brass hardware or castors.

Position the table alongside a sofa or armchairs as an accent surface, using its dark wood tone and detailed marquetry to provide historical contrast against modern upholstery.

Keep the wood away from direct heat and sunlight to avoid veneer damage, cleaning the surface with a soft dry cloth and applying natural beeswax polish periodically.
