Fine Regency Mahogany Chamber Writing Table

19th century
Description

An Exceptional Quality Regency Period Mahogany Chamber Writing Table, In The Manner Of Gillows Lancaster, Having Superbly Figured Top With Hinged Flip Flap To Back, Enclosing Pen Tray And Inkwell Divisions, Over One Drawer With Original Turned Knobs And Cockbeaded Panels To Frieze On All Sides, Raised On Fine, Elegant, Turned Reeded Legs With Original Brass Castors.

This “chamber table” is just about identical in design to one supplied by Gillows for Parlington Hall and also appears in the Gillows Estimate Sketch Books. Also the overall quality in construction is absolutely second to none and there is no doubt whatsoever that this table was produced under the banner of the world leading cabinet makers Gillows of Lancaster.

In terms of its function then as the name suggests this type of table, with the little hinged lid was originally designed to be used in a bedroom for occasional correspondence. Now of course it would serve as an incredibly elegant occasional, or lamp type table in a whole host of different places around the home.

This is a rarely found table which is of true Gillows quality and design and its presence alone would certainly add class, elegance and sophistication to any room, in any house.

As with all items which we offer for sale this table has been inspected by our highly skilled, trained antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being placed on sale, to ensure it is in its best possible condition for immediate placement after purchase.

This nineteenth century Regency chamber writing table is formed of dark brown mahogany with brass hardware. The rectangular top incorporates a hinged central writing hatch above a single frieze drawer fitted with two small turned wooden knobs, while cockbeaded panels run around the frieze on all four sides. The structure rests on four fluted turned legs terminating in original brass castors. Standing 74 cm high, 71 cm wide and 49.5 cm deep, it provides a compact surface for everyday use. Originally designed for occasional correspondence in a bedroom, this piece adapts well to contemporary settings as a lamp table or occasional table in a living room, study or hallway. The polished timber finish highlights the distinct grain patterns across the flat surfaces and turned supports. The functional storage compartment contains dedicated divisions for inkwells and pens, keeping writing utensils organised within easy reach.

Originating in early 19th-century Britain, Regency chamber writing tables are compact desks designed for personal correspondence, characterized by neoclassical proportions, fine timber veneers, and reeded or fluted turned legs.

Craftsmen predominantly used solid mahogany or rosewood, frequently incorporating brass castors, turned wood or brass knobs, and leather or timber inset writing surfaces.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, original brass castors with period-appropriate patina, and natural age-related wear around keyholes and base rails.

These tables function efficiently as compact home office workstations, hallway console tables, or accent writing desks in a bedroom or library alcove.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish annually along the wood grain to preserve the timber finish while avoiding direct sunlight and radiator proximity.
