This nineteenth-century Louis XV Revival giltwood demilune bijouterie table displays elegant neoclassical influence through its curved half-round shape and scrolling supports. The piece is finished in a warm gold colour, showing rubbing and wear to the gilded surface along with light marks to the wine-red velvet lining inside. A hinged glass top opens to reveal the display interior, featuring a small brass keyhole set into the curved frieze. Finely carved cabriole legs are united by shaped cross-stretchers and terminate in carved feet, creating a light and airy silhouette. Standing at 72.5 cm high, 61 cm wide and 46 cm deep, the table provides a compact display surface for jewellery and small treasures. It fits neatly into a narrow wall space in a hallway, bedroom or living area in a home today.

Demilune bijouterie tables emerged during the eighteenth century in France as specialized display furniture designed to showcase small personal treasures, trinkets, and jewellery. The semicircular profile allowed them to sit flush against walls in salons and dressing rooms, combining practical storage with decorative presentation.

Traditional giltwood display tables feature carved wooden frames, often softwoods like pine or lime, coated with gesso before gold leaf application. The glass top allows overhead viewing of items stored inside, which is typically lined with velvet or silk.

Authentic pieces from around 1900 display signs of hand-carving, natural wear to the gilding where underlying bole clay shows through, and period-appropriate lock mechanisms. The underside of the frame and interior joinery often reveal historical wood joints and hand-tool marks.

A giltwood demilune table functions effectively as an accent piece in hallways, dressing rooms, or alcoves. Positioning the table against a plain neutral wall highlights its sculptural silhouette and gilded finish without overwhelming contemporary decor.

Clean the gilded wood using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or light feather duster, avoiding liquid cleaners or water which can dissolve traditional gesso bases. Glass surfaces should be wiped carefully using non-ammonia glass cleaner applied directly to a cloth rather than sprayed onto the frame.
