This Victorian writing table or desk originates from England and dates from around the 1850 period, produced by Maple and Co. Constructed from satinwood with warm brown colour tones and notable wood grain patterns, the piece includes a black leather inset top finished with blind tooling along the edges. The framework incorporates two frieze drawers fitted with small wooden knob handles, supported by turned fluted baluster legs terminating in brass castors. Measuring 71 cm high, 123 cm wide, and 60 cm deep, the desk functions effectively within a study, a traditional gentleman's library, or a home office space. The design offers a practical writing surface alongside drawer storage, suiting placement against a wall or centrally within a room for everyday writing and administrative tasks.

A Victorian satinwood writing table is a nineteenth-century desk crafted from satinwood, a dense timber known for its golden colour and shimmering grain. These tables typically feature a leather writing inset, shallow frieze drawers for stationery, and turned or fluted legs.

Victorian cabinetmakers frequently used fine hardwoods such as satinwood, mahogany, and walnut for the primary frame. Writing surfaces were commonly lined with gold-tooled leather or skiver, while drawer interiors often utilised pine or oak, fitted with solid brass castors and handles.

Authentic pieces by Maple and Co often feature a makers stamp or brass plaque on the inner drawer edge or underside. Authenticity is further supported by high-grade dovetail drawer joinery, premium timber veneers, and original brass fittings consistent with late Victorian manufacturing techniques.

An antique writing table can serve as a functional home office desk paired with a simple modern desk chair, or as a slim console table in an entry hall or living area. Placing contemporary table lamps or ceramic accessories on top creates a balanced contrast between historic wood tones and modern decor.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking and discolouration. Preserve the satinwood with a high-grade beeswax polish applied sparingly, and clean the leather inset with a soft, slightly damp cloth followed by a specialised leather conditioner.
