Victorian Mahogany Writing Table

19th century
Description

A good quality mahogany writing desk dating from the early to mid 19th century. It has two drawers, each with turned wooden knobs and it stands on turned and reeded legs with castors. The top has an inset green leather writing surface with tooled edging and it comes with a working key for the drawers.

The desk is in very good condition for its age. It has a lovely colour and the writing surface is in good order. The drawers open smoothly and are generally clean and tidy inside. There are normal signs of light wear and age and some minor marks and small holes in the leather but nothing detrimental and it displays well. It has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian writing table is a piece of 19th-century study furniture typically crafted from solid timbers such as mahogany or walnut, often featuring a tool-embossed leather writing surface and frieze drawers.

These tables were commonly constructed using solid mahogany, rosewood, or oak, featuring hand-dovetailed drawer joints, brass castors, and inset leather tops.

Authentic pieces typically display hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original brass locks or stamped escutcheons, natural wear on turned legs, and period-appropriate brass castors.

Position the table as a focal workspace in a home office or living area, paired with a modern ergonomic or minimalist chair to contrast the traditional woodwork.

Maintain the timber by applying natural beeswax along the grain periodically, while keeping the leather surface conditioned and avoiding direct heat or sunlight.
