Exceptional Pair of Early 19th Century French White Tole Peinte Chestnut Urns

19th century
Description

This magnificent pair of early 19th-century French Empire period tole peinte chestnut urns represents a true museum rarity. Crafted from japanned iron, they were masterfully designed to simulate the delicate beauty of 18th-century South Staffordshire and Bilston enamels. While antique painted toleware is inherently difficult to find, the vast majority of surviving examples feature dark grounds such as black, green, or dark blue to mask imperfections in the metal. Finding a pair of this impressive size with a highly coveted pure white ground (fond blanc) is exceptionally rare.

The urns feature exquisite hand-painted romantic floral bouquets, butterflies, and intricately pierced ajoure galleries that showcase the pinnacle of Parisian craftsmanship.

Dimensions: 25 cm height; top diameters 17 cm and 16.8 cm; weights 553g and 554g.

Condition: They survive in truly breathtaking antique condition. The main floral decoration remains perfectly preserved. The minor, authentic signs of age — including slight paint loss to the pierced gallery and base rims, a hairline crack to the lower base and one finial, and some historical overpainting inside the lids — are entirely insignificant and do not detract from their spectacular appearance.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.

Tole peinte refers to lacquered or enamelled tinplate decorative items produced predominantly in France during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. These items feature hand-painted ornamentation, ranging from floral sprays to neoclassical motifs.

Chestnut urns, historically known as marronnieres, were constructed from folded sheet metal or tin, coated in enamel paint, and decorated by hand. They frequently feature pierced lattice galleries near the rim to allow heat dissipation when holding warm chestnuts.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-rolled metal edges, soldered joints, and subtle paint craquelure or wear to the surface. Hand-painted decorative motifs show natural variations in brushwork rather than uniform stencil lines.

A pair of tole urns creates balanced symmetry when positioned on a mantelpiece, sideboard top, or console table. They can be framed alongside architectural drawings or modern artwork to highlight their classical silhouette.

Clean toleware gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust without disturbing the paint layer. Avoid using water, liquid cleaners, or abrasive polishes, as moisture can seep into hairline cracks and cause underlying rust.
