This Victorian side table, dating from 1860, is made from rich brown burr walnut wood with a polished top of serpentine kidney-shaped outline and moulded edge. The piece stands on a pair of heavily carved baluster turned supports with decorative scrollwork detail at the base, terminating in shaped feet mounted on the original brass castors. Visible details include distinct swirling grain patterns across the burr walnut veneer and an undulating scalloped apron below the top. Measuring 75 cm high, 122 cm wide and 57 cm deep, the table fits neatly into a reception room, hallway or study. It functions well as a decorative console against a wall or positioned conveniently at the end of a sofa for everyday use.

FAQs

Kidney-shaped tables originated in eighteenth-century France before gaining widespread popularity in Britain during the nineteenth century. The curved silhouette was designed to fit comfortably around a seated person, serving as a functional surface for writing, embroidery, or dressing.

Victorian cabinetmakers frequently used solid European walnut combined with decorative burr walnut veneers laid over timber bases. Construction typically featured hand-carved pedestal supports, turned stretchers, and brass or ceramic castors.

Authentic pieces often exhibit maker stamps or brass badges, hand-carved details with minor irregularities, and natural timber shrinkage along joints. Examining the underside reveals aged timber, period screws, and original castor fittings.

A kidney-shaped table serves as an accent piece positioned at the end of a sofa or in an entryway. Combining the figured timber veneer with contemporary lighting or minimalist ceramics creates a balanced interior aesthetic.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a dry, soft cloth and applying clear beeswax sparingly once or twice a year. Keep walnut furniture away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer lifting or timber fading.
