Large Antique Indian Hand Engraved Brass Tray Floral Design C.1900 58.5cm

1900 - 1920
Description

An impressive large antique Indian brass circular tray, probably dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, circa 1900.

Measuring an impressive 58.5cm in diameter, this beautifully decorative piece features extensive finely engraved floral and scrolling foliate ornament, arranged in concentric circular panels surrounding a central floral medallion.

The intricate decoration is influenced by traditional Indo-Persian metalworking, with characteristics associated with northern Indian brassware, including Kashmiri and Benares work.

The tray has been formed from relatively thin copper-alloy sheet metal, with a gently raised and shaped rim decorated with further repeating floral motifs. Its generous proportions make it particularly suitable for decorative display, either as a large serving tray, wall-mounted feature or as the top of a suitable tray table stand.

The piece retains an attractive aged patina, with surface wear, scratches, minor marks, areas of oxidation and some small irregularities to the rim consistent with use and possible age. Please study the photographs for the overall condition.

This large antique Indian circular tray belongs to the Anglo-Indian style of around 1900. Made from brass with a muted gold colour, the piece displays extensive hand-engraved concentric floral and scrolling foliate ornament. The surface features a central floral medallion surrounded by repeating bands, chased geometric borders, and a shallow rolled edge rim showing surface wear, scratches, minor marks, areas of oxidation, and small irregularities. Measuring 4 cm high and 58.5 cm wide, the tray serves practically as a decorative item on a sideboard top or mounted on a wall. It can also function as a serving tray or as the top surface for a suitable tray table stand in a home.

An antique Indian engraved brass tray is a circular metal vessel or wall plaque crafted in India, typically during the late 19th or early 20th century. These pieces feature dense, hand-chased surface decoration consisting of floral scrolls, foliage, and geometric borders.

These trays were formed from sheet brass, shaped with a shallow basin and raised rim, and decorated using hand tools. Metalworkers utilised punches and chisels to engrave detailed patterns directly into the surface, occasionally filling recessed areas with black lacquer to highlight the detail.

Authentic period pieces show variations in engraving depth and slight symmetry imperfections indicative of manual hand tooling. They typically exhibit a naturally aged surface patination with mild oxidisation in recessed areas rather than a modern, uniform machine finish.

An antique brass tray can be placed flat on a coffee table or sideboard to anchor decorative objects like glass vases or candles. Alternatively, large circular trays can be wall-mounted or set on folding wooden stands to function as occasional tables.

To maintain the aged patination, wipe the brass with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. Abrasive chemical polishes should be avoided, as they can strip natural oxidisation from the engraved grooves and diminish detail depth.
