Large Carved Bamboo Page Turner or Paper Knife, Carp and Figure, Late 19th / Early 20th Century

1900 - 1920
Description

A large carved bamboo paper knife or page turner, probably Japanese Meiji or Chinese late Qing, circa 1880-1920.

Made from a single piece of bamboo with a warm red-brown finish, it is carved on both sides. The front shows a small robed figure riding a dragon-headed carp, a “carp becoming dragon” motif symbolising perseverance and success, amid swirling clouds, above a tree on rocks and a Greek-key band. The handle is carved with a peony and pierced for a cord. The reverse has a flowering branch, with an interlocking-circle lattice and scrolls on the handle.

A desk object for opening letters or cutting pages. At 45.5cm it is larger than most, and it also displays well.

This large page turner or paper knife is a Chinese desk accessory from the late 19th or early 20th century. Fashioned from a single piece of bamboo, it has a warm reddish-brown finish and measures 45.5 cm high. The handle is carved with a peony motif and pierced with a hole for a hanging cord, sitting above a Greek-key band. Relief carving along the blade depicts a robed figure riding a dragon-headed carp among swirling clouds, with trees and rocks below. The reverse shows a flowering branch alongside interlocking-circle lattice and scrollwork on the handle. A practical instrument for opening letters or cutting book pages, this piece brings character to an office desk in a gentleman's library. It lies flat on a surface patterned with pale green and grey floral motifs.

Page turners were essential desktop implements in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, designed to turn the fragile pages of bound books and newspapers without transferring oil or dirt from hands. In Chinese scholarly culture, carved bamboo page turners served both practical functions and as symbolic objects reflecting artistic taste.

These items were predominantly carved from seasoned bamboo, taking advantage of the natural strength and fine grain of the material. Skilled artisans used relief carving techniques (jiandiao) to fashion detailed low and high-relief designs depicting auspicious fauna, flora, and figures before applying dark stains or lacquers.

Authentic period pieces show fine manual carving tool marks rather than modern machine precision, along with a deep, naturally aged patina in recessed areas. Natural bamboo features, such as grain variations and slight hand-smoothed wear along the edges, indicate age and genuine craftsmanship.

A carved bamboo page turner functions well as a decorative tactile object displayed flat on a leather blotter, placed atop a stack of art books, or arranged in a shallow display tray on a study desk or console table.

Bamboo should be kept in a climate-controlled environment away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent drying and cracking. Dust regularly with a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water or chemical polish which can strip the historical patina.
