This Georgian slop bowl originates from the Dr Wall period of Worcester porcelain, dating to circa 1760. Made from cream soft-paste porcelain, it stands on a short raised foot rim and has a gilt rim. The exterior features polychrome enamel decoration comprising a hand-painted floral bouquet with pink, yellow, and blue flowers alongside green foliage, accompanied by smaller floral sprigs. The piece measures 15.9 cm wide and 7.3 cm high. In a modern interior, this bowl works well displayed on a sideboard top or used to hold small items in a living room, dining room, or entrance hall. The neutral cream body combines with the vibrant hand-painted floral motifs to suit an English Country House aesthetic.

FAQs

A slop bowl, also known as a waste bowl, was a standard component of 18th-century tea sets used to collect dregs and cold tea before refilling a tea cup.

First Period Worcester porcelain utilised a soft-paste body incorporating soapstone to provide thermal shock resistance, decorated with hand-painted polychrome enamel pigments.

Authentication involves examining the soft-paste body under transmitted light for a characteristic greenish tint, assessing foot rim construction, and checking painter marks or factory symbols.

An antique slop bowl can be positioned as a standalone decorative accent on a sideboard, placed within a glazed cabinet, or styled on a console table.

Clean gently by hand using tepid water and mild liquid soap, avoiding abrasive cloths, chemical cleaners, or submersion that could degrade overglaze enamel details.
