This late Victorian gentleman's shooting stick combines a walking cane with a folding seat, originating from France around 1890 and bearing the French patent mark Bte S.G.D.G. The piece is constructed from bamboo, iron, and brass, displaying a warm brown colour with a spotted pattern across the cylindrical shaft. It includes a folding seat handle at the top, metal support struts connecting the handle to the central post, brass collars, and a circular ground spike plate with a pointed tip at the base. The height measures 91 cm in stick position and 76 cm in seat position, with an open seat width of 34 cm and depth of 11 cm. Today, this item functions practically both outdoors as a walking aid and as a portable seat during rests, secured by pushing the metal spike into the ground. It is suited for placement beside the front door for ready access on walks. The metal components exhibit an unpolished, patinated finish showing signs of use in keeping with age, while the seat mechanism opens and closes correctly.

Originating in the 19th century, a shooting stick is a combined walking stick and portable seat designed to provide temporary seating during outdoor field sports and events.

Victorian examples typically incorporate turned bamboo or hardwood shafts, brass hinges, forged iron support struts, and a metal ground plate with a spike base.

Authentic period pieces feature natural patination on the bamboo, original brass or iron hardware fittings, riveted hinged mechanisms, and signs of period craftsmanship.

These items are commonly displayed upright in an umbrella stand, mounted on an entryway wall, or placed in a hall stand alongside vintage walking canes.

Dust regularly with a dry cloth, apply clear microcrystalline wax to preserve the bamboo finish, and keep metal components dry to prevent oxidisation.
