Curious 18th Century English Sycamore Platter with Burn Mark from an Iron C.1790

18th century
Description

The most splendid piece of 18th century social history and a favourite find. A curious English sycamore platter with a burn mark from a period iron, c.1790.

The burn mark left by a hot iron lends the platter a more intimate, human story. You can imagine a moment’s distraction, a heated iron set down too quickly, perhaps in the midst of a long day’s labour, leaving its trace on the wood.

Rather than diminishing the object, this mark enriches it. It speaks of use, of care, and of the hands that once moved through their routines. It carries a small, accidental memory of domestic life, preserved in its surface.

It has a historic split through the middle which is stable, along with the burn mark from the iron and various knife marks representing years of meals. Despite all of this, the platter was never disposed of. It holds lifetimes of stories.

Just wonderful!

Condition is as seen, commensurate with age and heavy use. It has a historic split through the middle which is stable, a burn mark from a period iron and various knife marks from heavy use.

This 18th century Georgian platter takes the form of a circular turned trench made from sycamore wood in a warm brown colour. The design incorporates a raised turned rim enclosing a shallow basin, showing a dark triangular flat iron scorch mark in the centre alongside numerous cross-grain knife cuts and a stable historic split running through the middle. The piece measures 24 cm wide by 2 cm deep. Items of this kind find a practical place in a home today displayed on a sideboard top, bringing a rustic farmhouse aesthetic to an interior space through its tactile wooden surface and authentic domestic history.

Treen refers to small domestic objects turned or carved from wood, with sycamore being a preferred timber in 18th-century Britain due to its dense grain and neutral tone that did not taint food.

Craftsmen turned platters on a pole lathe from a single piece of hardwood, typically sycamore, beech, or oak, before finishing the surfaces with hand tools.

Authentic period pieces display irregular hand-turned lathe lines, subtle oval warping caused by natural timber shrinkage over centuries, and legitimate marks of historical usage.

Display these items flat on a kitchen island, lean them against a wall on a sideboard top, or group them on open shelving to introduce organic timber textures.

Keep the timber dry, dust lightly with a soft cloth without water or chemical detergents, and periodically apply microcrystalline wax polish to protect the patination.
