This Victorian Gothic Revival decorative object takes the form of a late nineteenth-century Cornish serpentine stone model of an ecclesiastical font in dark green and red. The well-figured piece comprises an octagonal basin above four turned, carved columnar supports resting upon a stepped circular base with remnants of old felt underneath. Mouldings circle both the upper bowl and the heavy lower platform. Measuring 16.5 cm in height, the solid stone construction sits comfortably upon a mantelpiece in a traditional interior. It serves as a striking standalone display item on a surface within a living room, study or hallway, bringing rich mineral colour and architectural detail to a domestic setting.

These objects are miniature scale representations of church baptismal fonts, produced primarily in Cornwall during the 19th century as souvenirs or decorative accessories following royal patronage of Lizard Peninsula serpentine crafts.

They were lathe-turned and hand-carved from serpentine rock, a mineral named for its mottled green and red pattern resembling python skin, sourced predominantly from the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall.

Authentic period pieces feature characteristic dark green, red, and grey veining, precise turning lines from lathe work, significant heft due to stone density, and classic Gothic architectural proportions.

Position the object on a dark timber sideboard, mantelpiece, or within a curated cabinet of curiosities alongside brass accents to highlight its dark mineral tones.

Clean gently using a soft microfibre cloth slightly dampened with distilled water, avoiding harsh chemical detergents or acidic cleaners that could dull the polished mineral surface.
