This mid-19th century Victorian work and side table is constructed from reddish-brown mahogany and finished with ebony stringing. The hinged lid opens to display a removable fitted compartment tray above a storage cavity, while the front incorporates faux drawers fitted with brass lion head knobs. The piece stands upon slender, turned reeded legs. A maker's mark 'ET' is carved into the back. Measuring 77 cm in height, 87 cm in length, and 53 cm in width, it functions practically in a home today for holding office or laptop supplies, serving as a traditional work table, or acting as tableware and cutlery storage in a dining room.

A 19th-century mahogany work table is a specialized piece of occasional furniture designed primarily for domestic needlework, embroidery, and small craft storage. Popular during the Regency and Victorian eras, these tables feature hinged tops or deep drawers, often containing fitted trays and compartments.

Mid-19th-century work tables were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, prized for their rich colour and durability. Secondary woods such as pine or oak were used for drawer linings, while joints relied on traditional hand-cut dovetails, accompanied by cast brass hardware and hand-turned legs.

Authentic Victorian work tables feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, original brass hinges or knobs showing age-related tarnish, and evidence of hand-planed secondary timbers beneath drawers or lids. The presence of original fitted compartment trays and hand-turned leg profiles also indicates mid-19th-century manufacture.

An antique work table functions effectively in contemporary homes as a sofa end table, bedside stand, or hall accent piece. The internal compartments provide concealed storage for modern items like remote controls, stationery, or charging cables, blending historical character with utility.

Mahogany furniture should be dusted regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and polished twice a year with a natural beeswax polish applied along the wood grain. Keep the table away from direct sunlight, radiator heat sources, and damp environments to prevent timber shrinkage, warping, or finish deterioration.
