17th-century Indian Iron Spear Butt, Ribbed and Incised Decoration.

17th century
Description

An Indian iron spear butt, probably 17th century, of elegant turned form, comprising cylindrical sections between two pronounced cushion-shaped mounts, each decorated with raised, ribbed divisions and finely incised double-line ornament. The mounts are bordered by distinctive toothed or serrated collars, surmounted by a long, tapering spike with incised double rings, the lower section terminating in a circular socket.

The form closely compares with documented Indian and Mughal spear butts, including examples catalogued as Northern Indian, 17th century. The piece retains an attractive dark, aged patination with areas of surface wear and oxidation.

Height: 29 cm (excluding stand, if applicable).

Including stand 35cm high

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 17TH CENTURY:
Ribbed melon knops with saw-tooth collars: sculptural South Indian metalwork that fixes the style.
Dark oxidised iron with fine surface pitting: natural weathering from long age.
Lathe-cut double rings on the tapered spike: traditional hand-turned armoury decoration.
Old dried wood inside the socket base: remnants of the original wooden haft.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This seventeenth-century Indian iron spear butt follows a Mughal design. The turned piece is formed of cylindrical sections, two pronounced cushion-shaped mounts with raised ribbed divisions, and incised double-line ornament. Serrated collars border the mounts above a long tapering spike with incised double rings and a lower circular socket. The metal displays a dark grey colour with an aged patination, surface wear, and oxidation. The object measures 29 cm in height excluding the stand, and 35 cm including the stand. Placed on a bookshelf in a gentleman's library, the spear butt serves as a decorative metalwork display item. The vertical arrangement of the ribbed knops and tapered spike creates a striking profile for interior styling. The dark forged iron integrates well with traditional study settings and historic collections without requiring extensive space.

A spear butt, or ferrule, served as a counterweight to the primary spearhead, balancing the weapon during handling while protecting the wooden shaft from splitting when rested on the ground.

These items were hand-forged from wrought iron or steel, frequently featuring decorative ribbed knops and incised geometric patterns applied with chisels while the metal was hot.

Authentic period examples exhibit irregular hand-forged marks, surface oxidisation in recessed areas, fitting sockets consistent with historical shaft sizes, and traditional regional motifs.

When mounted on a modern display stand, the item functions as a vertical sculptural artifact suited for display on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or console table.

Keep the metalwork in a climate-controlled room with low humidity to prevent rust, clean gently with a soft dry brush, and apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax for surface protection.
