This Art Nouveau card tray dates from the period around 1900, manufactured from silver plate and Britannia metal with a silver finish. The rectangular piece displays characteristic whiplash curves, openwork handles, linear engraving, and stylized leaf patterns, standing on four bun feet. Surface signs of age include oxidation marks and a dark tarnish within the recessed wells of the metalwork, alongside light scratching across the central plate. Measuring 34 cm by 22 cm, the tray fits well upon a hallway console table or a library desk. Placed beside the front door, it provides a functional surface for holding visiting cards, pocket items, or keys in a modern home.

German Art Nouveau metalware, known as Jugendstil, was heavily influenced by fluid organic forms, sinuous whiplash curves, and stylized naturalistic patterns. The manufacturer WMF produced cast and stamped silver-plated wares that brought these modern artistic movements into domestic interiors during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

WMF manufactured card trays primarily using electroplated Britannia metal, a white metal alloy composed of tin, antimony, and copper. This base alloy was cast or stamped with detailed relief work and subsequently electroplated with silver, often finished with localized oxidisation to emphasize the relief details.

Authentic pieces generally feature stamped makers marks on the underside or rim, such as the WMF running ostrich mark or letter block stamps. Additional indicators include stamped model numbers, EP silver-plating stamps, and characteristic period motifs such as pierced openwork handles and stylized floral lines.

An antique card tray can be positioned on a hallway console table to collect keys, or placed on a bedside table and dressing table as a catch-all dish for jewellery. Its low profile and structured linear design allow it to serve as a functional accent on coffee tables or desks.

Clean silver-plated metalware using a soft microfiber cloth and warm water with mild detergent to remove surface dust. Avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemical polishes that can strip thin electroplated layers or remove the original intentional factory oxidisation within recessed details.
