This early Victorian rosewood card and games table exemplifies classic mid-nineteenth-century British furniture design. The piece utilizes solid rosewood and attractive rosewood veneers displaying a rich dark brown colour with a figured grain pattern across the D-ended, fold-over top. The construction includes a rectangular apron above four turned and tapering legs decorated with stylised tulip carvings, all terminating in original solid brass caps and castors. Measuring 75 cm high, 91 cm wide and 45.5 cm deep, the table fits neatly against a narrow wall space or functions as a decorative console in a hallway or drawing room. When the top rotates and opens, it provides a functional surface for games or writing, making it a practical addition to a traditional study, library or living space today.

FAQs

During the nineteenth century, card tables were designed for drawing rooms and reception areas, functioning as compact side tables that unfolded into green baize-lined surfaces for evening games.

These pieces were crafted using highly figured rosewood veneers over mahogany or pine frames, incorporating turned legs, swivelling top mechanisms, and brass castors.

Authentic examples display dense timber grain, traditional hand-cut joinery on internal sub-frames, original brass castors, and a rotating fold-over top mechanism.

When closed, the table serves as a hall console or sofa-back table, offering a compact footprint while showcasing the rich figure of the polished timber.

Dust regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish along the direction of the grain annually while avoiding direct sunlight and heat.
