This Victorian luggage stand takes the form of a solid oak utility piece in a dark brown timber, dating from circa 1890 with an English Country House style and Arts and Crafts influences. The rectangular top comprises five open slats, set above four turned and faceted legs with detailed collars and tapered feet. Lower cross-stretchers unite the uprights in a double H-configuration, secured by exposed through-tenons that reveal traditional joinery. The timber displays a warm patina, visible grain variations, and surface wear consistent with age and regular handling. Measuring 39.5 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 39.5 cm deep, the stand functions as a compact support. Positioned in a bedroom or dressing area, the frame works well placed at the foot of a bed for holding cases, textiles, or daily garments. The open platform gives a functional surface for temporary storage, while the lower stretchers provide structural rigidity. The piece remains heavy and structurally solid in very good antique condition, ready for immediate domestic use.

Originating in the late 19th century, luggage stands were placed in country house guest bedrooms to keep heavy leather suitcases and travel trunks off the floor, facilitating packing and unpacking for visitors.

These pieces were typically crafted from solid dense hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, joined using traditional mortise and tenon timber construction for durability.

Authentic period examples display signs of hand-carved joinery, natural timber oxidisation, subtle wear to the slatted surface, and turned or tapered legs typical of late 19th-century cabinetry.

In modern interiors, these low slatted stands function well as alternative coffee tables, low plant stands, display benches, or functional luggage supports at the foot of a bed.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality natural beeswax polish annually, avoiding direct heat sources and liquid spillages.
