John Howkins Antiques has dated this Jamaican Specimen Wood Table to the 19th Century.
The edge having feathered multi woods banding and thumb moulded edge. Below an unusual scrolling foliage frieze with carved “C” scrolls, moulded square corners and turned finials. The base having a wonderful spiral turned column with 3 shaped and acanthus carved supports joining the cabriole legs with further scrolling carved detail. Condition- Fine, no breaks or damage. NOTE. Ralph Turnbull was born in Scotland in 1788 and emigrated to Kingston, Jamaica with his brothers around 1815. By the 1820s, he had his own independent workshop. He became legendary for creating a distinct Jamaican Colonial Style by adapting traditional British furniture designs to showcase the spectacular variety of local Caribbean timbers.
