A refectory table is a long dining table originally created for communal dining halls in monasteries during the medieval period. The design evolved into standard domestic use, characterized by a solid timber plank top, heavy supports, and low structural stretchers.

Traditional refectory tables are constructed from solid hardwoods, primarily oak, walnut, or elm. Crafting techniques include mortise and tenon joinery, wooden pegs, cleated breadboard ends, and turned baluster or trestle legs connected by heavy floor-level stretchers.

Authentic period refectory tables display indications of hand-crafting such as adze marks, pegged joints, historical timber movement, and authentic wear patterns along the footrest stretchers. The surface usually exhibits depth of colour and patination developed over long-term wax application.

A refectory table functions as an anchor piece in open-plan kitchens or formal dining areas. Pairing a heavy timber table with contemporary seating or modern pendant lighting creates a balanced contrast between historic structure and clean design.

Maintain solid oak furniture by wiping surfaces with a soft, dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish periodically to protect the finish. Use trivets or mats to protect against moisture and heat, and position the table away from direct heat sources.
