This nineteenth-century salt-glazed stoneware planter and drinking trough comes in an earthy brown shade with a rustic Victorian aesthetic. The piece displays sculptural faux-bois tree trunk decoration, pierced stoneware side panels, and a prominent central ram head motif with textured curly horns and a perforated snout. Constructed from durable ceramic material, the rectangular trough exhibits solid structural integrity alongside weathered age-related signs of use, surface wear, and natural patina. The dimensions measure 76 cm in height to the top of the ram, 40 cm in height for the trough itself, 82 cm in width, and 60 cm in depth. Placed within a traditional interior, this unusual object suits a deep window sill, conservatory, or garden room setting as a decorative container or planter. The robust ceramic design accommodates botanical displays of seasonal plants, herbs, or small trailing foliage. It integrates well into rustic interiors, country house schemes, or Highland hunting lodge decor styles. The weathered salt-glazed finish and sculptural animal detailing provide a strong focal point when positioned on stone flooring, rustic wooden tables, or deep sills.

A salt-glazed stoneware trough is a durable ceramic vessel produced during the 19th century, characterized by a glossy, orange-peel textured glaze formed by throwings of common salt into the kiln at peak temperature.

Coarse clay was molded or hand-sculpted into form before being fired in high-temperature kilns, where sodium chloride was introduced to react with silica in the clay body to form a waterproof sodium silicate glaze.

Authentic pieces exhibit a characteristic pitted glaze texture, heavy weight, age-appropriate wear to the base, and hand-sculpted or press-molded architectural details typical of period potteries.

An antique trough can serve as a rustic centerpiece on a large dining table, a planter on a deep window sill, or a decorative container on a fireplace hearth.

Clean using warm water and a soft bristle brush with mild detergent, avoiding harsh chemicals or abrasive tools that could compromise surface patination or delicate raised details.
