This large industrial advertising sign dates from the 1920s and is constructed from vitreous enamel over steel, finished in a stark white and deep blue colour palette. The rectangular piece is divided horizontally into two sections and features bold block typography, a central circular motif, and a diagonal banner graphic with brass corner grommets showing rust and weathering around the edges and fixing points. The lettering details W. J. Smith & Co., builders and decorators located at 311 Hornsey Road, N.19, alongside references to Archway 1241. Measuring 240 cm in height by 302 cm in width, the sign is well-suited for commercial environments or large residential spaces, functioning effectively as wall art above a sideboard in a warehouse apartment or dining room. The heavy-duty steel and enamel construction provides a durable finish designed to withstand industrial wear, while the visible oxidation and surface marks add authenticity to the period piece.

Vitreous enamel signs were constructed by fusing powdered glass onto a heavy steel base plate at high temperatures during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This process created a durable, weather-resistant finish featuring vivid colours and sharp graphic lettering.

Early twentieth-century commercial signs were primarily manufactured from rolled steel plates coated with layers of mineral enamel glass, fired in kilns to prevent rust and weathering outdoors.

Authentic vintage enamel signs exhibit distinct weight, a glossy glass-like surface, and layered raised lettering created during stencil firing. Genuine age typically presents edge oxidisation, surface patination, and minor chipping around mounting holes.

Large enamel signage serves as a focal statement piece in industrial loft spaces, modern kitchens, or hallway entrances. Designers frequently pair them with raw brick, reclaimed timber, or neutral wall backdrops to emphasise historical typography.

Clean enamel signs gently using non-abrasive soapy water and a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical solvents or abrasive pads. Exposed metal edges prone to oxidisation can be protected with a light coat of microcrystalline wax.
