This Georgian serveware item is an 18th-century Dr Wall First Period Worcester porcelain butter boat made from soft-paste porcelain with a blue and white glaze. It takes the form of an open leaf-shaped bowl featuring a scalloped rim, a small looped leaf-form handle, and a hand-painted underglaze blue central rose motif with a running floral border. The exterior displays moulded overlapping geranium leaves and a blue crescent mark to the base. A small chip to the underside of the rim and a tiny discoloured nick to the handle are visible. Measuring 9cm long, 6.8cm wide and 3.7cm high, this piece serves as a decorative accent for a sideboard top in an English country house interior. It functions practically to hold small items or as a cabinet display collectible.

First Period Worcester refers to soft-paste porcelain crafted at the Worcester factory between 1751 and 1783 during the directorship of Dr John Wall, recognised for high soapstone content and cobalt blue decoration.

Soft-paste porcelain was formulated using white clay combined with ground glass or soapstone, allowing firing at lower temperatures to produce a warmer translucency compared to hard-paste porcelain.

Authentic pieces frequently display underglaze blue crescent or square marks, precise hand-painted floral decoration, and a characteristic greenish or yellowish translucency when viewed under light.

Small antique porcelain vessels can be styled on a sideboard top, curated inside a glass display cabinet, or arranged alongside complementary contemporary ceramics to create visual interest.

Preserve early porcelain by hand washing gently in tepid water with mild soap, avoiding chemical cleansers, hot water, and dishwashers to protect delicate glazes.
