Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

This early nineteenth-century terrestrial table globe originates from the Regency period and is attributed to the London maker Cary. The piece consists of a twelve-inch sphere covered in printed paper gores, retained in its original lacquer, and mounted within a brass meridian ring. The supporting tripod stand is built from warm brown mahogany with turned detailing, curved legs terminating in pad feet, and an integrated base compass positioned centrally beneath the globe. The timber exhibits a deep patina with visible signs of age across the polished surfaces. Measuring approximately 90 cm in height, the globe sits securely on any substantial surface. In a modern interior, this item functions as a decorative accessory for an office desk, a library table, or a study bookcase within a gentleman's library setting.

Regency table globes from the early nineteenth century feature hand-coloured copperplate engraved paper gores laid over a hollow sphere. They are mounted within a calibrated brass meridian ring and supported by turned wooden tripod stands, often crafted from mahogany, featuring integrated horizon rings and base compasses.

The central sphere was constructed from plaster over papier-mache, covered with printed paper gores. Stands were typically crafted from solid mahogany or rosewood, accompanied by engraved brass meridian rings and glass-covered magnetic compasses set into the base.

Authentic globes feature a printed cartouche on the sphere listing the cartographer or publisher name, such as Cary or Newton, along with the date and city of publication. Additional indicators include hand-coloured copperplate printing, visible seams between paper gores, original brass patina, and period-appropriate turned joinery.

A table globe functions as an intellectual focal point when positioned on a dark wood desk, library table, or sideboard. Pairing it with antique leather-bound books, brass accents, or contemporary minimalist shelving creates a balanced visual contrast.

Position the globe away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent paper fading, cracking, and wood warping. Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water, solvents, or commercial polishes on the printed paper surface.
