Antique George III Mahogany Fold-over Tea Table C.1790

18th century
Description

A late Georgian mahogany fold-over tea table, the rectangular top folding open to a sizeable surface, supported on a hinged leg to the rear, all raised on reeded square legs.

Its slim closed depth serves particularly well as a narrow side table in a hallway or living space where space is limited, with the flexibility to extend for serving or entertaining as needed.

Very good antique condition with minor surface wear and rich patination consistent with age. Structurally sound, mechanically smooth in operation and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1790.

A George III fold-over tea table is an 18th-century piece of English furniture designed with a hinged top that flips open to double its surface area, originally created for serving tea and socialising.

These tables were typically crafted from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, featuring hand-dovetailed joints, wooden gate-leg hinges, and reeded or square tapered legs.

Authentic late Georgian tea tables feature hand-planed underside surfaces, original iron or brass hinges with hand-cut screws, patinated timber wear on the swing leg, and period joinery.

When folded closed, the table functions as a slim console or side table along a hallway or living space wall, while unfolding it provides an expanded surface for entertaining or display.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or cracking, wipe clean with a soft dry cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish twice yearly.
