18th Century Brass Processional Cross

18th century
Description

A 17th Century-style cast brass processional crucifix. The cross has fleur-de-lys terminals and applied medallions depicting the four apostles, with a figure of Mary to the reverse. It has been mounted on a brass pole fitting and stands on a later turned wooden base.

Believed to date from the late 18th Century it is in very good condition for its age. There have been some repairs to the tips of the cross and there is a later copper nail through the left hand but there are no major damages. The cross has a wonderful patination and its large size makes it a very decorative object.

This ecclesiastical processional cross dates from the late 18th century and is executed in the 17th-century style. Cast in brass with hand-engraved scrollwork, it displays a central figurine of Christ, fleur-de-lis terminals, and applied medallions. The construction incorporates a brass pole fitting mounted on a turned black wooden base, complemented by repairs to the cross tips and a copper nail through the left hand. Warm brass and deep black tones define the palette. Measuring 56 cm high, 23 cm wide, and 23 cm deep, the object sits appropriately upon a mantelpiece in a traditional interior today. The piece functions as a decorative item for domestic display within a living room or study.

A processional cross is a sacred emblem mounted on a pole, carried at the head of a religious procession during liturgical services. Historically, these items were designed to be detached from their carrying poles and placed upon an altar stand during worship.

Processional crosses from the 18th century were typically cast from brass, bronze, or silver-plated alloys using sand casting techniques. The central crucifix, filigree terminals, and decorative medallions were often hand-engraved before being riveted together and fitted onto a socketed base.

Authentic pieces from this era exhibit hand-chased surface irregularities, evidence of hand-cut screw threads, and wear along handle sockets. Look for natural patination in recessed details and hand-riveted joins rather than uniform modern casting or machine threading.

An antique metal cross functions effectively as a sculptural focal point on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard top, or within a curio cabinet. Placing it against a neutral backdrop or pairing it with dark timber accents highlights its metallic texture and historic form.

Preserve the natural patina by avoiding chemical polishes or abrasive metal cleaners that remove historical oxidisation. Dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth, and apply a light coating of microcrystalline wax annually to protect the surface from atmospheric moisture.
