Description

A large & rare Spode Porcelain Square Tray from a Cabaret Set decorated in pattern 1166 c.1820. One of the most sumptuous designs produced by Spode.  Pattern 1166 was first recorded in about 1808.  The pattern is ground laid in cobalt blue, hand painted and gilded on Spode's pure white bone china. It is gilded and painted entirely by hand. The combination of cobalt blue and gold is one of the most expensive in ceramic decoration as it is produced with 2 of the most expensive raw materials. This extravagance, coupled with these gorgeous flowers, makes this design one of the most magnificent to come out of the Spode factory.

Condition: Excellent with no damage. Just a small amount of retouching to some worn gilding.

This Regency decorative dish is a large square Spode porcelain tray from a cabaret set, dating to around 1820 and decorated in pattern 1166. The pure white bone china piece displays a ground laid in cobalt blue, enriched with a hand-painted and gilded intricate scale pattern, accompanied by hand-painted floral bouquets in pink, yellow, purple and orange hues within reserves. The square tray has a scalloped rim with gilt detailing, featuring four patterned circular medallions and a central white reserve containing pink roses and buds. The object measures 29 cm high and 29 cm wide. Produced during the early nineteenth century under the direction of Josiah Spode II, Regency Spode porcelain gained international distinction for perfecting the bone china formula and developing elaborate decorative patterns featuring cobalt blue grounds, heavy gilding, and botanical enamelling.

Pieces were crafted from bone china, incorporating bone ash for strength and whiteness. Decoration involved high-fire cobalt blue glaze underlayering, hand-applied ceramic enamel paint for floral reserves, and mercury gilding burnished to achieve a metallic sheen.
