Pair of Chinese Kangxi Vung Tau Cargo Shipwreck Blue & White Dishes

17th century
For Sale by Hand of Glory
Description

A pair of Chinese Kangxi blue & white shipwreck blue & white shallow dishes from the Vung Tau Cargo, late 17th Century, bearing 'Vung Tau Cargo' lot stickers from the Christies, Amsterdam auction of April 1992, and collection identification numbers painted to the raised foot.

The 'VUNG TAU CARGO' was discovered in 1989 by a Vietnamese fisherman on the Southern Coast of Vietnam. The cargo was salvaged by the Vietnam Salvage Corporation and the contents subsequently sold at Christie's Amsterdam in April 1992.

The ship was an Asian trading vessel, dated to circa 1690 during the reign of the Emperor Kangxi. It had been burnt to the waterline as it was bound for Indonesia from China. Batavia (now Jakarta) was the centre of the enormous Dutch East India Company (VOC) where the consignment would have been prepared for an onward voyage to Holland.

3.5cm high, 12cm diameter.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 17TH CENTURY:
Christie's Vung Tau Cargo paper labels: sold at the 1992 Amsterdam auction.
Cobalt blue motifs under the glaze: freehand painting of the late seventeenth century.
Matte, etched glaze surface: long immersion in seawater.
Rough unglazed foot rim with kiln sand: southern Chinese provincial firing.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

These two 17th century Chinese Qing Dynasty shallow dishes are porcelain items from the Vung Tau Cargo, recovered from a shipwreck discovered off the southern coast of Vietnam in 1989. Each circular dish has an off-white glaze decorated with underglaze blue cobalt brushwork, a raised rim, and an unglazed footrim. One dish displays surface seawater degradation and rough marine encrustations across the center. The other dish shows a smoother off-white glaze with similar blue brushwork bands. Both pieces stand vertically on brass display stands. These small decorative items measure 3.5 cm high and 12 cm in diameter. Originally bound for Indonesia from China on an Asian trading vessel that burned to the waterline, the consignment was sold at auction in Amsterdam in April 1992. The dishes bear auction lot stickers and collection identification numbers painted on their raised feet. Suitable for a gentleman's library or study, these shallow dishes work well placed on top of a wooden sideboard as a display element. They bring maritime history and antique porcelain design into a modern domestic interior.

Vung Tau cargo porcelain refers to Chinese export ceramics recovered from an Asian vessel shipwrecked off the coast of Vietnam around 1690 during the reign of Emperor Kangxi. These pieces were produced in Jingdezhen for European trade before remaining submerged for centuries.

These dishes were formed from white porcelain clay, decorated by hand using cobalt blue pigment under the glaze, and fired in high-temperature kilns. Prolonged exposure to seawater has modified the original clear glaze finish.

Authentic shipwreck ceramics display characteristic ocean-wear, matte surface etching, or marine encrustation resulting from underwater immersion, alongside period-appropriate potted footrims and cobalt brushwork style.

These historical ceramics can be styled on metal brassware stands upon a sideboard, arranged inside a display cabinet, or incorporated into a shelf vignette alongside books and natural specimens.

Maintain ocean-salvaged porcelain by dusting gently with a soft dry brush or a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water. Avoid chemical cleansers, abrasive tools, or prolonged soaking to protect delicate marine encrustations and degraded glazes.
