1930s Wade England Art Deco Green Pottery Bird Handle Architectural Jug Vase 19cm

A distinctive and unusual 1930s English Art Deco pottery jug or vase by Wade, modelled in an architectural form and finished in an attractive soft green glaze.

The tall square-section body is moulded to resemble rusticated stone blocks, with raised bunches of grapes and foliage decorating the lower section.

The most striking feature is the sculptural handle, formed as a curving branch rising to a perched bird, creating a highly decorative silhouette typical of Wade’s imaginative inter-war pottery designs.

The upper section flares into a broad square rim with recessed moulded panels, giving the piece a strong architectural character. The soft celadon / sea-green glaze emphasises the moulded detail and is particularly characteristic of English decorative pottery of the Art Deco period.

The underside carries a clear printed “WADE ENGLAND” backstamp, confirming manufacture by Wade.

Wade and Wade Heath produced a wide range of Art Deco decorative wares during the 1930s, including moulded jugs, bird-handled forms and other highly stylised novelty designs. Many of the 1930s forms continued into the early 1940s.

Condition

Good vintage condition overall, with some age-related crazing and light surface wear.

There are several tight hairline cracks around one corner of the upper rim, together with a small area of associated glaze loss / bruising. The rim remains structurally intact and no major section is missing.
