Description

An unusual Edwardian blackthorn walking stick with hand carved walnut double dogs head handle c.1910. Hand carved walnut handle in the form of two hunting dogs heads, the handle mounted to the stick with a nickel mount. The blackthorn stick with original turned horn tip to the end. Excellent quality with a very straight stick, and presented in good original condition with a rich polish. Keep up to date via our Instagram channel - sturmansantiques.

FAQs

During the Victorian and Edwardian eras, novelty walking sticks featuring carved animal heads were popular fashion accessories for country gentlemen. Dogs, particularly sporting breeds, reflected the eras fascination with field sports, hunting, and canine companionship.

Blackthorn wood from the Prunus spinosa shrub is favoured for its tough nature and dark, knobbly bark. Handles were commonly hand-carved from dense hardwoods or horn, often joined to the shaft using a metal collar made of silver, nickel, or brass.
