Description

A very fine Chamberlain Worcester porcelain sauce tureen and cover c.1815-1820 made for Charles Douglas, 6th Marquess of Queensberry, KT (March 1777 – 3 December 1837). Decorated in in pattern 298 imari style of the Yeo service, the Queensberry crest at the front with a coronet and a crown, a heart and two wings, with the word 'FORWARD' in a ribbon.

Introduced during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, sauce tureens were small covered porcelain vessels designed to keep sauces and gravies warm during formal dinner service.

Chamberlain Worcester produced soft-paste and hybrid hard-paste porcelain, decorated using hand-applied cobalt glazes, enamel colours, and mercury gilding.

Authentic pieces feature detailed hand-painted armorial crests, precise Imari patterns, burnished gold decoration, and occasionally factory marks painted or impressed on the underside.

These decorative vessels function well displayed on a dining sideboard, arranged inside a glazed display cabinet, or positioned as a decorative centrepiece on a mantelpiece.
