S and S Timms Antiques Ltd has dated this Regency Rosewood Pembroke Table to the Regency era.
Dating from the early part of the 19th century, this is a particularly charming little Regency table, the unusually diminutive proportions making it considerably more interesting and versatile than the larger Pembroke tables which are more commonly encountered.
The two hinged drop flaps can of course be raised independently when required, considerably increasing the usable surface area, whilst folding neatly away when not in use.
The frieze incorporates one useful drawer, with a corresponding false drawer to the reverse maintaining a pleasing symmetry. The brass knobs are replacements, whilst the table is raised on four particularly elegant turned legs, terminating on replacement old brass roller castors.
Pembroke tables became extremely popular from around the middle of the 18th century onwards, largely due to their incredible versatility. Indeed Hepplewhite himself described them as amongst the most useful of tables and numerous references can be found in period literature to them being used for everything from dining and writing, through to ladies needlework.
This particular example is what is generally referred to as a “Baby Pembroke”, simply meaning that it is considerably smaller in proportion than the more conventional full size examples. The two hinged flaps still allow the available surface area to be significantly increased when required, whilst its diminutive proportions make it even more versatile for use around the modern home.
One of the great attractions of this table is undoubtedly its size. It would originally have been intended as a small occasional table, but today its compact proportions leave it open to a whole host of different uses around the home. It could work equally well alongside a sofa or armchair, as a lamp table, occasional table, or even as a particularly attractive small bedside table.
A really lovely quality Regency table, combining beautifully figured rosewood, elegant proportions and considerable practicality, whilst its unusually small scale gives it a charm and versatility which is increasingly difficult to find.
As with all our items this table has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled and trained traditional antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale. It is therefore ready to place straight into the home.
