Regency Maltese Patience Table in Olive and Satinwood Veneers

19th century
Description

A fine Regency Maltese Patience table in olive and satinwood veneers. Maltese Made furniture became highly desirable and fashionable around the early 1990s following the release of the book by Joe Gallia Naudi titled 'Antique Maltese furniture' which extolled the virtues and beauty of it. Since then it has remained incredibly popular, boosted of course by the fact that there is not a huge amount of Maltese furniture found on the market. Generally it can be identified through a variety of different features including but not limited to the use of fabulously attractive olive wood veneers and the inlay of a Maltese cross or sometimes a similar star in the table top. Very often the secondary material and craftsmanship will also be of significantly inferior quality to what you would find on a similar piece made in one of the grander European cities of the time simply due to the availability and the skill of the local cabinet makers. We are almost certain that this pretty little table is Maltese in origin and dates to the early 19th century it is fabulously useful little size and incredibly elegant perhaps down to the simplicity of the design.

Height 29" 74cm

Height max 40.5" 103cm

Width 17.5" 44cm

Depth 13" 33cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Designed during the early 19th-century Regency period, a patience table is a compact occasional table specifically crafted for playing single-player card games such as solitaire or patience.

These tables frequently feature native and exotic veneers, including olive wood, satinwood, and rosewood, applied over pine or oak substrates with hand-cut marquetry borders and turned pedestal supports.

Authentic period pieces typically display thick hand-sawn veneers, irregular dovetail or mortise-and-tenon joinery underneath, natural age-related shrinkage in the timber, and original brass fittings or hinges.

A patience table functions well as an occasional side table beside an armchair or sofa, providing a compact surface for lamps and books while introducing historical geometric detail.

Position the table away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement or veneer lifting, dust regularly with a clean lint-free cloth, and apply beeswax annually.
