Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Fine glaze crazing across the ceramic tiles: natural ageing of early glazes.
Pierced heart cut-outs in the aprons: typical Arts and Crafts motif.
Quarter-sawn oak showing distinct medullary rays, the silvery flecks of period timber.
Gentle wear and finish thinning along the outer edges: years of regular handling.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Arts and Crafts occasional table from 1900, constructed from oak with a medium brown finish and ceramic tiles in two tones of green. The square top has a moulded wooden border enclosing a checkerboard tile surface, raised on four square tapering splayed legs connected by an arched apron decorated with pierced heart cutouts on the sides. The table measures 71 cm high, 53 cm wide, and 38 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this piece functions well at the end of a sofa or as a decorative accent in a living room, hallway, or study. The compact proportions allow it to fit comfortably beside seating or against a wall, providing a sturdy surface for lamps, books, or decorative objects while adding a distinct Arts and Crafts character to the interior.

FAQs

The Arts and Crafts movement, originating in the late nineteenth century, emphasised traditional craftsmanship, simple forms, and visible construction techniques using honest materials such as solid oak and handmade tiles.

Tables from this period typically feature solid native hardwoods, predominantly quarter-sawn oak, fitted with glazed ceramic or earthen tiles in geometric or naturalistic patterns.

Authentic pieces often exhibit characteristic design motifs such as stylized heart-shaped cutouts, subtly splayed legs, arched friezes, and original glazed ceramic tiles inset into the top surface.

These compact tables function effectively as accent pieces alongside upholstered seating, placed in reading nooks, or utilised as plant stands to highlight natural wood textures.

Timber surfaces should be preserved using neutral beeswax applied along the grain, while the ceramic tiles require gentle cleaning with a slightly damp cloth to preserve the glaze.
