Description

Beautiful Antique Anglo-Indian Wine Chest Cellarette on Stand – Circa 1900

Brief Description:

A beautiful and highly decorative antique Anglo-Indian wooden wine chest or cellarette on its original stand, dating to around 1900.

This substantial piece has a wonderful colonial appearance, constructed in richly figured solid timber and extensively mounted with brass corner straps, braces and fittings.

The large hinged chest retains its working lock and key with decorative tassel and opens to reveal a particularly interesting divided interior, incorporating a large storage compartment alongside a series of smaller individual bottle divisions.

The chest is raised upon its original substantial wooden stand, with four beautifully turned and reeded legs united by square stretchers. The combination of the warm, naturally aged timber and mellow brass fittings gives the piece tremendous character.

The top is particularly attractive, retaining its decorative central pierced brass plate together with substantial brass corner mounts.

A very handsome and unusual piece of Anglo-Indian furniture which would make an impressive wine or drinks cellarette, while also serving as a striking decorative furnishing piece in its own right.

An Anglo-Indian cellarette on stand is a specialised wooden storage chest constructed in India during the British colonial era, designed to house wine and spirit bottles. These pieces blend European furniture proportions with regional timbers and durable brass hardware.

Colonial cellarettes were predominantly crafted from dense, climate-resistant hardwoods such as teak or rosewood. They frequently feature hand-fitted dovetail joinery, heavy brass corner brackets for structural reinforcement, and carved turned legs on a separate wooden base.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-forged brass mounts, original key escutcheons, and characteristic native timber grain such as teak. Look for hand-planed surfaces, traditional mortise-and-tenon joints on the stand, and natural age-related patination.

A cellarette functions effectively as a focal point in a dining room, hallway, or study. It can be styled alongside modern artwork or utilised as a functional drinks cabinet for decanters and glassware.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to protect the wood finish. Avoid abrasive chemical cleaners on the brass mounts to preserve the natural oxidisation and historic surface patina.
