Description

A fantastic antique burr walnut card table of the highest order. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1900-1920 period.

It is of outstanding quality, with fine and intricate carving throughout. The burr walnut grain patterns and colour tones are gorgeous throughout. The top spins round and flips open to reveal a baize covered playing surface with walnut borders and built in recesses for chips. This is really one of the finest quality card tables you could find. When closed and not in use it makes an absolutely gorgeous console table.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age.

Card tables emerged in the late seventeenth century alongside the rise of social card games, featuring fold-over tops designed to convert a narrow side table into a square gaming surface. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, cabinetmakers produced elaborate versions using fine veneers such as burr walnut and incorporating hand-carved decorative motifs.

These tables typically feature solid walnut framing and legs topped with highly figured burr walnut veneers laid over a stable secondary timber like oak or pine. Construction usually incorporates hand-carved cabriole legs, carved aprons, brass hinges, and a rear leg mechanism that swivels or extends to support the unfolded surface.

Authentic pieces show evidence of period craftsmanship, including hand-cut dovetail joints, original iron or brass gate-leg hinges, and natural patination across exposed surfaces. Examining the underside reveals hand-sawn timber markings and uniform oxidisation consistent with age.

Positioned against a wall when folded, a card table functions as a compact console table ideal for displaying table lamps, ceramics, or framed artwork in a hallway or drawing room. Its carved silhouette and rich wood grain introduce texture and historical interest into contemporary spaces.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, radiators, and damp environments to prevent veneer movement or timber warping. Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to protect the finish.
