This early 20th century Japanese folding screen belongs to the Meiji style and consists of a four-panel hinged construction made from dark brown hardwood and lacquer, complemented by deep carved bone figures. Each panel features a dark central rectangular section displaying raised bone inlays of birds perched among flowering branches, all bordered by gilded floral decoration. Elaborate pierced crest carvings sit along the top of each panel, showing intricate openwork motifs, while the lower sections display further carved woodwork panels. Standing upright on the ground, the screen measures approximately 165 cm in height by 180 cm in total width when extended. Suitable for use in a living room, bedroom, or dressing area, this piece functions both as a decorative room divider and as a striking standalone backdrop against a wall. The dark wooden framework folds easily via hinges between the panels, allowing the furniture to be arranged at various angles to suit different room layouts. Its maximalist design pairs well with eclectic or traditional interiors, adding texture and colour through the combination of dark lacquered wood surfaces, gilded floral details, and natural bone elements.

Japanese folding screens, known historically as Byobu, originated as functional windbreaks and room partitions before evolving into decorative art pieces during the Meiji and Taisho periods, frequently featuring detailed relief carvings and natural material inlays for domestic and export markets.

These screens typically combine solid hardwood frames, often dark-stained or lacquered, with central panels ornamented with hand-carved natural materials such as bone, mother-of-pearl, or horn set against lacquered surfaces.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved crests, hand-cut joinery, subtle structural variation in the carved bone elements, and natural age-related wear or fine cracking along wood panel joins.

A carved folding screen can be mounted flat against a wall as architectural art, positioned behind a bed as a headboard alternative, or placed partially folded in an open-plan room to define functional zones.

Dust the screen gently using a soft, dry cloth or feather duster, and maintain a stable humidity level away from direct sunlight or heat sources to prevent the wood from warping and the inlaid bone from loosening.
