Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1850s:
Fine shrinkage lines across the marquetry ground: natural movement in 19th-century veneer.
Cast brass corner mounts with darkening in recesses: age to the metalwork.
Sunlight fading and wear across the baize: long exposure on an early surface.
Flush-fitting brass card table hinges: standard construction for mid-19th-century games tables.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian French Louis XV Revival card and side table dates from 1850 and is manufactured from rich brown kingwood with floral marquetry inlay, gilt-bronze ormolu mounts, and a serpentine top outlined by an ornate brass edge. Four shaped cabriole legs support the freestanding serpentine frieze, decorated with cast ormolu mounts depicting facial masks at the knees and scrolling scrollwork feet. The hinged folding top opens to reveal an internal surface with further marquetry inlays, and the two rear legs extend outward to support the folded leaf when opened. Measuring 76 cm high, 85 cm wide, and 41.5 cm deep when closed, this piece sits well in an empty corner, drawing room, or hallway as a decorative side table or occasional games table. Its compact depth makes it suitable for placement against a wall, while its finished back allows it to stand independently in the centre of a reception room.

FAQs

Popularised during the nineteenth century, Louis XV Revival furniture sought to recreate the elegant, fluid forms of mid-eighteenth-century French design. Card and games tables were essential social features in affluent households, crafted with complex marquetry and brass ormolu ornamentation to demonstrate social prestige.

These tables are typically constructed with exotic timber veneers such as kingwood, tulipwood, or rosewood over solid oak or pine cores. Decorative floral inlays feature contrast woods like sycamore or boxwood, while chased gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts reinforce corners and leg edges.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery, hand-carved oak carcass construction beneath veneers, and heavy cast metal mounts with hand-chased detailing. Original surfaces often display fine age-related crazing in the varnish and slight unevenness in hand-cut marquetry tesserae.

A marquetry card table serves as a statement console against a neutral wall, within a hallway, or inside a bay window alcove. Placing modern artwork or minimalist ceramics directly above or alongside the table creates a compelling visual contrast between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary style.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and fluctuating radiator heat to prevent veneer lifting or fading. Clean the timber with a soft microfibre cloth and apply high-grade beeswax sparingly, while cleaning brass ormolu mounts with a dry brush to avoid stripping historical patination.
