Meissen was the first European manufactory to discover the secret of hard-paste porcelain in the early 18th century. Their figurines became internationally renowned for setting the standard in European ceramic modeling, artistic design, and table decoration during the Baroque and Rococo periods.

European figurines were typically crafted from hard-paste porcelain, a mixture of kaolin clay, feldspar, and quartz fired at extremely high temperatures. The items were subsequently covered with a lead-free feldspathic glaze to create a smooth, vitreous surface before hand-finishing.

Authentic pieces generally feature the factory mark of two crossed swords painted in cobalt blue under the glaze, though the exact style of the mark evolved over centuries.
