Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A gilt eagle console table is a Neoclassical or Regency style wall table supported by a carved, gilded wood eagle base, often topped with a marble slab. Popularised in the 18th and early 19th centuries, these decorative tables were traditionally designed to stand against a wall in grand entrance halls and reception rooms.

These tables were typically carved from solid hardwoods such as pine or lime wood before being coated in gesso and gilded with fine gold leaf. The tabletops and plinth bases were frequently fitted with heavy polished marble slabs, such as verd antique or dark green marble, to provide stability and contrast.

Authentic antique gilt wood exhibits signs of natural age, such as slight cracking (craquelure) in the gesso layer and gentle wear revealing the red or yellow bole clay underneath the gold leaf. Hand-carved details will show subtle irregularities, and the timber joinery on the underside should reflect traditional construction techniques rather than modern machine cuts.

Position the table in a foyer, hallway, or living room alcove as a focal point, pairing it with a large oil painting or a sleek gilded mirror mounted directly above. Keep tabletop accessories minimalsuch as a pair of brass candlesticks or a contemporary ceramic vaseto allow the carved architectural base to remain the central feature.

Dust the carved gilded surfaces gently with a soft, dry feather duster or camel-hair brush, avoiding wet cloths or chemical cleaners that can dissolve the delicate gold leaf and gesso. For the marble top, wipe away spills immediately using a damp microfibre cloth and mild pH-neutral soap, avoiding acidic cleaning agents that etch natural stone.
