Antique Victorian White Ironstone Cheese Dome and Stand, Wheat and Lattice, C.1875

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

An antique Victorian white ironstone cheese dome and stand, made in Staffordshire, England, and attributed to Ridgway, Sparks & Ridgway, circa 1875.

The cylindrical dome is relief-moulded with a trellis lattice ground overlaid with sheaves and ears of ripe wheat, bound with twisted straw. The domed top is moulded with a band of stylised foliage and rises to a shaped bud finial. The matching circular stand repeats the wheat and lattice moulding around its broad rim, with a recessed well to seat the dome. The undecorated white glaze allows the crisp relief moulding to carry the whole design.

Large covered cheese domes of this type were a fixture of the Victorian dining room, made to hold and present a whole truckle of Stilton or Cheddar at table. The wheat and lattice motif was among the most popular of the moulded white ironstone patterns of the period, drawing on harvest imagery associated with plenty and hospitality.

Dimensions: height 30 cm; diameter 31 cm; weight 3979 g. Condition: lightly soiled and would benefit from cleaning. There is a very small chip to the rim of the stand, and a fine hairline running around the interior of the stand, visible in the photographs; this hairline is surface only and does not extend into the body. No other damage, cracks or repainting. Examined under UV light. Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. Shipping costs include handling, packaging and postage.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Introduced during the nineteenth century, an ironstone cheese dome consists of a deep, bell-shaped ceramic cover and a matching underplate designed to keep whole wheels of cheese protected and at room temperature.

These pieces were crafted from dense, vitreous earthenware known as ironstone, which was molded under pressure with intricate relief patterns, glazed in neutral tones, and fired at high temperatures for durability.

Authentic nineteenth-century ironstone typically displays heavy weight, clear maker marks or registration diamonds stamped on the underside, and raised relief molding such as floral, agricultural, or geometric patterns.

An ironstone cheese dome serves as a functional centrepiece on a kitchen island, sideboard, or dining table, acting as decorative ceramic accentware or displaying artisan baked goods and cheeses.

Hand wash the item using mild dish soap and warm water, avoiding abrasive scouring pads or dishwashers to prevent crazing, chipping, or dulling of the original glaze.
