An Antique Oak and Chestnut Coffee Table

19th century
Description

A late 19th century Arts and Crafts freestanding low or coffee table in oak and chestnut, the plain rectangular top above a frieze and with a small drawer fitted to one side and with a brass pull knob, raised on tapering square supports, English circa 1880.

Condition: Overall very good, the table is in very good condition with no damage, the drawer slides smoothly and the table stands well with no wobbling, and the table was conceived as we see it today - it has not been cut down from a standard height table. Overall it has a wonderful simplicity with a pleasing colour and patina, redolent of the Arts and Crafts style.

This freestanding low coffee table dates from 1880 in the Arts and Crafts style, constructed from oak and chestnut with a dark brown timber colour and a warm patina. The rectangular plank top sits above a plain frieze containing a small central drawer on one side, fitted with a small round brass pull knob. Four straight square legs support the structure, showing gentle surface wear across the aged wood. The dimensions measure 40 cm high, 90 cm wide, and 56 cm deep. This versatile low table functions well as a practical centrepiece in a living room, study, or snug, providing a durable surface for everyday use.

Country style low tables were traditionally crafted from native hardwoods like oak and chestnut, featuring functional design elements such as plank tops, straight legs, and single drawers for storage.

These tables typically utilise dense hardwoods such as oak and chestnut, constructed using mortise and tenon joints, pegged construction, and hand-planed timber planks.

Authentic pieces display signs of age such as natural timber shrinkage across the planks, hand-carved peg construction, drawer runners showing uneven wear, and historical patination in the finish.

An antique oak low table serves as a grounding focal point in contemporary living rooms, pairing effectively with neutral upholstered sofas, modern ceramics, and minimalist decorative accessories.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber, avoiding direct heat sources and chemical cleaners.
