Description

Antique 19th century Victorian washstand in mahogany, a graceful and beautifully shaped piece with an elegant serpentine front.

Well made and of good quality, it has the refined proportions and decorative detail that give Victorian furniture such lasting appeal.
A carved central pillar adds an eye-catching focal point to the design, while the raised gallery to the top creates a smart, well-finished profile. Together, these details give the washstand a particularly distinctive appearance without taking away from its elegant shape.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian mahogany washstand is a mid-to-late 19th-century piece of furniture designed to hold a ceramic basin and water pitcher for bedroom or dressing room use. These pieces feature carved wooden supports, lower platform bases, and shaped surfaces crafted from dense hardwoods.

Victorian washstands were predominantly constructed using solid mahogany and mahogany veneers over soft timber carcases. Some designs incorporated marble tops to protect the woodwork from water damage, alongside hand-carved decorative motifs and dovetail joinery.

Authentic 19th-century washstands display signs of period construction, such as hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed secondary timbers, and natural wood grain oxidisation. Look for original French polish finishes, hand-carved detailing, and natural wear on the lower plinth or feet.

An antique mahogany washstand functions effectively in contemporary homes as a hallway console table, vanity conversion, or landing focal point. Styling with modern ceramics, minimalist lamps, or architectural greenery creates a contrast between historic timber and modern design.

Maintain mahogany furniture by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying beeswax polish annually to preserve the timber and finish. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources, moisture, and prolonged sunlight to prevent warping or fading.
