Description

This is a very special piece of furniture. When we first saw this incredible washstand, our first impression was that it was a brand new, unused, reproduction piece of furniture! Upon closer inspection we realised that it was actually around 125 years old & has never been really used never mind abused! It is in immaculate original condition! Edwardian quality at its finest! It is actually an early 20th century mahogany and satinwood washstand or hall table. This lovely piece has a mottled marble top over a single drawer base with tapering legs and brass castors. An Edwardian mahogany and satinwood washstand or hall table. The warm brown piece combines a mottled brown and white marble top with a high wooden splashback curving upwards at the sides, above a single central drawer fitted with two circular brass pull handles. Satinwood stringing inlays decorate the drawer front and square tapered legs, which terminate in small brass castors. The height is 99 cm, the width is 97 cm, and the depth is 53 cm, with a working surface height of 77 cm. Practical for use as an occasional table in a hallway beside the front door or in a bedroom, the surface provides space for small everyday items while the drawer offers concealed storage. The timber retains its polished finish and clear grain patterns throughout the structure.

An Edwardian marble top washstand is a piece of cabinet furniture produced during the early 20th century, originally designed to hold a basin and water pitcher for personal washing prior to widespread indoor plumbing. These pieces frequently featured stone tops, splashbacks, and fitted drawers for storage.

Craftspeople constructed Edwardian washstands using fine hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, often decorated with satinwood inlays and delicate boxwood stringing. The tops were fitted with natural marble slabs, chosen for their water resistance and heavy-wearing surface.

Authentic Edwardian washstands display light, refined proportions, square tapered legs often ending in brass castors, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and original brass hardware. Timber surfaces typically show soft natural patination and minor wear consistent with age.

In modern interior schemes, an antique washstand serves effectively as an entryway console table, a compact writing desk, or a bathroom vanity supporting a modern basin. Its shallow profile makes it suited to hallways, landings, and alcoves.

Clean the wood structure by dusting with a lint-free cloth and applying beeswax periodically to preserve the timber finish. Clean marble surfaces using a soft cloth and pH-neutral cleaner, taking care to wipe up spillages immediately to prevent surface etching.
