This Victorian washstand follows the Sheraton Revival style, produced during the nineteenth century by Gillows of Lancaster. The warm brown satinwood construction displays detailed urn marquetry inlay upon the twin cupboard doors, complemented by a substantial dark-veined marble surface and matching splashback. Brass drop handles equip the three drawers, whilst turned feet fitted with castors support the base. Additional elements include decorative moulding framing the upper structure and brass hardware on the cupboard doors. Practical proportions place the height at 163 cm, the width at 137 cm, and the depth at 64 cm. Such a substantial furnishing serves well within a traditional English country house interior, functioning appropriately as a striking display or decorative storage console within a hallway, bedroom, or living area.

Popularised in the 18th and 19th centuries, marble top washstands were crafted as bedroom or dressing room furniture designed to hold water pitchers, basins, and grooming accessories prior to indoor plumbing.

Cabinetmakers frequently combined timbers such as satinwood, mahogany, or walnut with durable marble tops and backsplashes, often adding inlaid marquetry, brass handles, and brass castors.

Authentic period construction techniques include hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, natural patina on timber and metalwork, stamped maker marks on drawer edges, and original stone fixing points.

An antique washstand can be converted into a functional bathroom vanity unit by adapting the surface for a basin, or utilised as a hallway console, dining room server, or home bar cabinet.

Clean the timber using a soft cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically, while sealing the marble surface to protect against liquid absorption and avoiding acidic cleaning agents.
