Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, French washstands were designed as functional bedroom furniture incorporating marble tops to resist moisture from washing basins. Over time, these pieces evolved to include integrated mirrors and drawers for vanity storage.

These items are typically constructed from dense hardwoods like oak, walnut, or fruitwood, paired with marble or stone slab surfaces. Secondary timber such as pine is often used for drawer linings, complemented by cast brass or bronze hardware.

Authentic examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints, asymmetrical carved detail along the apron or crest, and original marble slabs with hand-chiselled undersides. Look for natural wear along drawer runners and hand-turned or carved cabriole legs.

In contemporary settings, a marble-top washstand functions effectively as a hallway credenza, dining room sideboard, or converted bathroom vanity unit. Pairing the carved timber frame with neutral walls and minimalist accessories balances the historical detailing.

Maintain the oak by dusting regularly with a microfibre cloth and applying a neutral beeswax polish along the wood grain annually. Protect the marble top from acidic liquid spills by wiping up moisture immediately and using protective mats.
