This large Japanese Imari porcelain charger dates from the late 19th century and exemplifies the Meiji period decorative arts. The piece is finished with a glossy glaze in a palette of dark cobalt blue, iron-red, and gold, presenting a central motif of a dark blue urn filled with orange and blue flowers resting on striped floorboards. This central medallion is encircled by radiating fan-shaped panels featuring floral and abstract motifs against alternating white and blue grounds, all within a lobed and scalloped rim. Three additional details visible on the object include the gilt accents throughout the panels, the dark blue cloud-like motifs at the outer edges, and the curved handles on the central urn. Measuring 6 cm high, 42 cm wide, and 42 cm deep, this substantial charger serves as a decorative accessory for display on a sideboard top or dresser within an English Country House interior. The item exhibits no hairlines, cracks, or chips in the glaze, remaining in excellent condition.

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese porcelain produced in the Arita region and exported from the port of Imari. It is defined by its characteristic palette of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron-red, and gilding, featuring intricate floral and geometric motifs.

Traditional Imari ceramics were formed from kaolin clay and fired at high temperatures. Underglaze cobalt blue was painted before the initial glaze firing, after which iron-red enamels and gold highlights were applied over the glaze and fired a second time at a lower temperature.

Authentic late 19th-century Imari pieces display hand-painted decoration with natural variations in line thickness and enamel depth. Look for characteristic spur marks on the base, slight glaze pinholes, and the classic combination of cobalt blue, iron-red, and gold embellishments.

An Imari charger can be displayed on a plate stand atop a dark wood sideboard or mounted on a neutral wall to add texture and colour. The contrast between deep cobalt blue and iron-red tones complements both traditional mahogany furniture and contemporary marble surfaces.

Dust the surface regularly using a clean, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid soaking the piece or using abrasive cleaners, chemical agents, or scrubbing pads, as these can wear away or scratch the delicate overglaze enamels and gold leafing.
