Burmese Carved Gong

19th century
Description

A striking Burmese carved gong, richly ornamented and full of character, in excellent antique condition, complete with its padded‑head carved striker. The stand is profusely carved in deep relief, featuring flowing foliage, mythical creatures, and a central figure framed within an arch of leaves — all hallmarks of traditional Burmese craftsmanship. The gong itself hangs from original chains, its darkened surface showing the mottled patina of age and use. A wonderful example of 19th–early 20th century Burmese carving — sculptural, symbolic, and increasingly scarce in such complete and untouched condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Burmese carved gongs originated as traditional instruments used in religious ceremonies and local communities across Southeast Asia. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, foreign influence and colonial trade led to the production of elaborately carved wooden frames surrounding central bronze gongs for exportation and residential use.

The frames were predominantly carved from dense regional hardwoods such as teak or rosewood, chosen for durability and fine grain. The suspended central gongs were cast using bronze or brass alloys to produce resonant acoustic tones when struck.

Authentic period pieces feature deep relief carving executed by hand, displaying organic motifs, mythological beasts, and deity figures. Signs of authentic age include natural patination on the timber, tool marks from manual carving chisels, and surface oxidisation on the metal gong.

A carved gong serves as a sculptural accent on a sideboard, console, or within a hallway setting. The rich timber tone and detailed carving provide textural contrast when placed alongside minimalist furniture or within classic decorative schemes.

Dust the intricate carved wooden frame regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush to clean deep crevices. Apply a microcrystalline wax polish sparingly to nourish the hardwood, while avoiding abrasive metal cleaners on the bronze gong to preserve its historic surface patina.
